After many years spent in County Wicklow, the completely different character of the landscape was a chal- lenge. In time, the stretches of local bog became an essential source of subject matter. In the flat, windswept landscape, he noted that the pools formed in old bog cuttings became a rich and recurrent inspiration in works that could be as abstract as a Mark Rothko but are still saturated with a sense of the landscape and informed by constant contact with it.
