His spare, Japanese aesthetic - he once said that the Japanese flag, a red disc on a flat white ground, was his greatest influence - led him to develop an art of simplicity, tranquillity, bit also energy. The circle and the square, and the symmetrical elaborations of both, form the core of his compositions.
