The ship came to grief during a storm in March 1960. Islanders helped the crew to dry land and no lives were lost, but the vessel was thrown onto the high tide line by violent seas. O’Donoghue’s work, often starting with his own family background, considers how the lives of ordinary people are informed and shaped by landscape, memory and the inexorable workings of wider historical events. We can presume that Ulysses, in this case, is one of countless merchant seamen who routinely brave the elements.
