I rish & I nternational A rt M onday 21 st O ctober 2019 at 6.00 pm 139 116 Norman Garstin (1847-1926) British The Garden of Calendars, Burford (1918) signed and dated 1918 oil on canvas laid on board 55 x 46cm (21.7 x 18.1in) Provenance: Collection of Richard and Mary Gretton, Calendars, Sheep Street, Burford, UK; Private Collection €1,500-2,500 (£1,327-2,212) Norman Garstin and his daughter Alethea spent some time during WW1 in the village of Burford in the Cotswolds staying at Greyhounds Guesthouse, Sheep Street. He was a regular visitor to Calendars, the house in Sheep Street was the home of Richard and Mary Gretton. This view is of the garden at Calendars which he painted for the Grettons. His daughter Alethea also painted a view of Calendars garden. Garstin painted several views of Burford during his stay including ‘The Bull Hotel’ which is in the Tate collection.
