146 128 Brian Maguire (b.1951) Portrait of Anthony Cronin signed verso acrylic and crayon on paper 57 x 77cm (22.5 x 30.25in) Provenance: Private Collection €2,000-€3,000 ($2,247-$3,370) (£1,694-£2,542) Renowned as an expressionist, politically engaged painter, Brian Maguire is a sensitive portraitist. His work depends on a pro- found sense of connection with the subject, and that is clearly the case with Anthony Cronin, who was not only a key literary figure but played an important role in cultural politics. As advisor to Charles Haughey he was instrumental in establishing Aosd·na and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
