Morgan O'Driscoll Irish & International Art Auction 29th April 2019

116 93 Tony O’Malley HRHA (1913-2003) Winter, Ireland (1963) signed, titled and dated verso with artist’s archive no:6404 oil on canvas 51.25 x 76.5cm (20 x 30in) Provenance: Private Collection €4,000-€6,000 ($4,494-$6,741) (£3,389-£5,084) Tony O’Malley made the point that he did not so much paint landscapes as “inscapes.” The early 1960s was a challenging though exciting time for him. He had made the life-changing decision to settle in St Ives and paint fulltime. Yet it’s notable that he produced a number of dark, brooding paintings during this period, such as this richly atmospheric meditation on winter. He was reflecting on his position as an exile - albeit his exile was voluntary.
