Morgan O'Driscoll Irish & International Art Auction 29th April 2019

112 90 Patrick Collins RHA (1911-1994) Onward Way (1986) signed lower right and dated 1986 oil on canvas 60 x 73cm (23.5 x 28.75in) Provenance: Private Collection €2,000-€3,000 ($2,247-$3,370) (£1,694-£2,542) Celebrated for the dreamy intensity of his lyrical Irish landscapes, Patrick Collins was fascinated by the way that the landscape - bogland, ragged pasture, ancient monuments, smallholdings, the Atlantic shore - was imbued with a mystical, Celtic aura. In the 1980s he became interested in Chinese painting, admiring the way it transcended Western perspective and he began to experiment with freeing himself from traditional perspective. The result was a series of cut-out canvases, works that allowed him to figura- tively soar above the landscape, like a bird.
