Morgan O'Driscoll Irish & International Art Auction 12th November 2018

96 80 Sean McSweeney HRHA (1935-2018) February Bogland (2000) signed lower left and dated (20)’00, titled on reverse oil on board 35.75 x 46cm (14 x 18in) Provenance: Private Collection €2,500-€3,500 (£2,232-£3,125) When Sean McSweeney moved to Sligo with his family in 1984, he was returning to a townland he knew well, though he later observed that it took him a long time to settle there. The landscape was very different to Wicklow, where they had lived for many years. But in time his own stretch of bogland, with its rectangular cuttings, became a source of year round inspiration. The constant- ly changing light, texture and colour provided an inexhaustible range of variations for some of his finest work. The sunny expanses of Fields, Sligo, offer an overview, while February Bogland zooms in for a dark, wintry close-up of a bog cutting.
