Throughout the 1950s and ‘60s he developed and refined an elegant, rhythmic style of painting - of which this composition based on a village on the island of Tenerife is a particularly fine example - that centres on a Cubist approach to spatial arrangement and is informed by an innate rhythmic sense (he was also an ardent and gifted musician).
