The experience made a lasting impact on his work and he has returned many times since. Apart from the rugged beauty of the coastline, he was also drawn to the buildings and communities in this tough, weather scoured environment. He made studies and paintings of Ballycastle itself and, on several occasions, the strikingly located Stella Maris, built as a 19th century Coastguard headquarters, now a small country hotel.
