This led him to move away from the conventional compositional rectangle and experiment with shaped canvases. It was a controversial move that unsettled many of those familiar with his ear- lier work. The late Vincent Ferguson was in tune with Collins’ artistic vision and was one of his few patrons to realise the significance of this late development in his style.
